It wasn’t until 2011 that the world would hear new Urge Overkill music, when the band released Rock & Roll Submarine (which earned a four-star review in Mojo.) Now, a decade later, is the world ready for more? There is only one answer: Oui. After a string of acclaimed releases on Touch & Go Records (including Stull EP, containing their cover of Neil Diamond’s “Girl, You’ll Be A Woman Soon,” which became a hit after being featured in Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction), the band moved to Geffen Records and issued a pair of albums which took over alternative radio. And as they barreled forth into the upside. As a byproduct of a scene where the band t-shirt became an increasingly common signifier of regular guy bona fides (to the point where it was almost a uniform), Urge Overkill oozed panache. Its 25th anniversary reissue is out now through Porterhouse Records in a clear blue vinyl edition of 1,000. Now, a decade later, Urge Overkill returns with Oui-twelve new tracks from Kato and Roeser, including eleven originals and an Urge-ified cover of Wham!’s “Freedom!” It’s the logical extension of everything everyone loves about Urge Overkill-killer riffs, memorable hooks, and the style and swagger of Nash Kato and King Roeser. Two years later, Rock & Roll Submarine was released to great acclaim (garnering four stars from Mojo magazine.) Kato and Roeser reunited in 2010, playing a set at Tarantino’s Friar’s Club Roast, and sat on the podium alongside Samuel L. After 1995’s Exit The Dragon, Urge’s whirlwind first decade came to a close. With the release of Saturation and prominent placement in Quentin Tarantinos pop-culture flashpoint Pulp Fiction, Urge Overkill assumed the arena-rock. The film and soundtrack became a massive hit, rocketing Urge into the public consciousness. While working on Saturation’s follow-up, Quentin Tarantino picked Stull’s “Girl, You’ll Be A Woman Soon” for inclusion in his upcoming film Pulp Fiction. Urge tapped Kramer (Bongwater, Butthole Surfers) to produce 1992’s Stull EP, which included a cover of Neil Diamond’s “Girl, You’ll Be A Woman Soon” and the original “Goodbye To Guyville”-whose title was adapted by Liz Phair for her acclaimed debut. tour, and Urge Overkill was playing arenas. Pulling their name from Parliament’s title track “Funkentelechy,” Urge Overkill was born in 1984, releasing their debut EP Strange I… on fellow Northwestern student Steve Albini’s Ruthless Records (with Albini in the production chair, as well). Roeser and Kato, two Minnesota native sons, met at Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. Urge Overkill is comprised of two unique voices. The interweb backhanded it (stadium rock by clever post-punkers or a perfect swaggering blend of arena rock and power pop) with local Chicago critics similarly dissing it (Steve Albini called them frat rock in his retort to Bill Wyman including it in a top 10 list for 1993, while Jim.
